C is for Creepy Characters

Okay. So Karen and I are having fun doing polls for the A-Z Challenge, but the Blogger Poll sucks. haha. So, from now on, the choices will be listed directly in the blog post and you can leave your vote in the comments.  And with that out of the way, onto today's poll...

LETTER C: Creepiest Characters in Literature
Pennywise from, “IT”

Voldemort from the Harry Potter

Annie Wilkes from “Misery”

Alex from “A Clockwork Orange”

The White Witch from Narnia

President Snow from The Hunger Games

Marisa Coulter from His Dark Materials

Big Brother 1984

So, which one of these gives you the most nightmares? Upon first glance, some of those listed may seem more innocent than others. Certainly Marissa Coulter wasn't as bad as Alex from Clockwork Orange. *** HIS DARK MATERIAL SPOILER ALERT*** Or, hang on. Wasn't she the one cutting out children's soul's for the "Oblation board?  Doesn't she turn her own daughter over to the board? **ALERT ENDED**

But maybe the White Witch doesn't belong in the poll. After all, she was from a children's book. Still....didn't she enslave an entire world, not only keeping it winter forever (and never Christmas) but turning anyone who dared defy her into stone?

So... what about Big Brother in 1984? The evil there was more subtle, but did that render it any less real? I could go on, but I shall spare you. Just remember that not all evil is obvious and cast your vote wisely!! Or should I say cast your vote Pennywisely....bwahahaha....

  1. Good picks. Hard to choose who should win the trophy for being the creepiest.

Today, I will choose Big Brother because 1984 is an alarming reminder of the horrors that can occur when government takes away its people's power. I'm actually going to mention the book later on during A to Z.

  3. Annie Wilkes was terrifying. I can still hear her saying, "I'm your number one fan." Wack! there goes the foot. Makes you afraid of being a successful author.

  4. Ooh, I really like President Snow, but I definitely have to go with Annie Wilkes. I don't think I've ever read a book where I literally yell at the pages, telling him to "get out while you can!" "She's gone for a few minutes, leave!!"

  5. I can't stand Pennywise...so creepy. He ruined clowns for me.

  6. see quick breakdown... all clowns are creepy, voldemort is a baby, he needed to rush it before he was ready, alex, was a nut job [parental guidance is all]... white witch, another one with two much time... she could have just been happy, 1984 is still going on and will hit sooner than later... i don't know about the couple other... the winner is Anne, for her that was pure devotion, she wasn't evil so much as a fan... a number one fan.

    sorry for the crazy answer...

  7. I want you to know I still have nightmares about IT. STILL! I love creepy characters. They are so complex and a ton of fun to write about.

President Snow is a good on too.

  8. I think I got lost in the directions and was able to find my way back to your site until now. Sorry for that!
I think I would vote for Pennywise or Anne. Most likely Anne.

  9. My vote is on Pennywise. With some mentions above, he solidified my hate for clowns. I shouldn't have watched it as a child, but what can ya do.

"They all float down here." is a phrase I still use to this day lol

Someday I will actually read the book. Someday...

Was there no poll? I don't see one up. Just curious :)

  11. I'd have to say Pennywise was the creepiest...for obvious reasons :)

  12. Cynthia--Great choice, I was wondering if anyone would pick it!

Laura, Mary and Mere- I agree that Annie Wilkes is the creepiest. I'm not sure who it would be for me. It's between her and Pennywise. But I JUST got done reading Misery. Do you guys remember the line where she "rapes him back to life with her breath" and he forces himself to breathe so she won't keep giving him CPR? SO creepy. Yeah. Now that I'm thinking about it, Annie gets my vote too.

Regina--I hate clowns too. I find all of them creepy, but Pennywise the most.

Jeremy--haha. Great answer. Annie is winning by a longshot.

Mina--Thank you!! My son argued that President Snow was merely evil, not creepy--but I remember his whole bit with taunting Katniss with the rose. CREEPY! And yeah--Pennywise will give anyone nightmares.

Al--Glad to see you back!! :) Another vote for Anne. She was my vote too!!

Jak--Nope. No poll from now on. Blogger polls suck and they kept screwing up the vote count. So, we're just going to do the poll in the post. And yeah, Pennywise got a ton of votes, but I think Annie Wilkes is still beating him. They all float down here is one of the creepiest phrases I've ever read in a book!!

Hilary--Yeah, Clockwork Orange was a SERIOUSLY disturbing book!!

Mark--Pennywise and Annie Wilkes are the definite two victors so far. Apparently people don't like clowns and women with axes. Who'd have guessed?

  13. Great picks! Oddly, the creepiest moment/character ever (for me) was the woman in Sixth Sense who walks around in the kitchen at night in her pink bathrobe. Freaks me out just thinking of it!

  14. Alex? Hey, I resemble that!
Hope you can join us next month for the IWSG. They are an amazing bunch of people.

  15. Juliet--Oh my God, I remember her. She was creepy as hell!!

Alex--haha. My father used to always say that! (I resemble that) I've never heard anyone else use that saying. You just brought back a nice memory. Thanks. And yes, they are a great bunch. They've helped me through quite a few insecurities!

  16. Oh. My. Gosh. Just thinking of Annie from Misery creeps me out. I have major issues sleeping without my feet under the covers. I'm afraid she's gonna come and break my ankles. *cringe*

  17. Pennywise for me...for sure! Agree with Jeremy that all clowns are creepy but man...shiver. Awesome post and theme. I'll be back. :)

  18. Can I pick someone else? I'd go with Dracula (Bram Stoker). I used to read that book in the dead of the night and I couldn't sleep after that. Like literally.
